First Dance Songs That Work as Solo Piano

Almost any song can become a solo piano first dance — I've arranged everything from Sinatra to metal ballads — but some translate so naturally that the piano version ends up better than the original for dancing. Here's what makes a song work, and twenty-five that always do. (I'm a wedding pianist in Augusta; arranging couples' songs is a standing part of every booking.)

What makes a song work on piano

A melody that stands alone. If you can hum it in the car, piano can carry it. Songs built on production texture rather than melody (a lot of EDM, some hip-hop) need more rearranging — still doable, but ask for a preview.

A danceable tempo, or one that can settle into it. Live arrangement fixes most tempo problems; a rushed radio edit becomes a slow dance when the pianist decides it does.

Emotional weight in the harmony. The songs on this list survive being stripped to their bones because the bones are good.

How the custom arrangement works

Send the song when you book. I chart it, arrange it for solo piano at a tempo you can dance to, and if you want to hear it before the day, I'll send a phone recording of the arrangement. On the night, it's played live — which means if your dance runs long, the song does too. Recordings can't do that.
